Doscher Riverside Retreat

A private retreat on the Ashley River

North Charleston · By the river · By invitation

The Hosts

A house built for the people we love.

When we built this house on the Ashley, we built it for the people we love — for the cousins flying in from out of town, for the friends we hadn't seen in years, for the next generation finding their footing in the world. The plans had a guest room before they had a primary suite. That tells you everything you need to know about why we're here.

The Lowcountry has a way of slowing people down. The marsh runs on its own clock. The tide doesn't care about anyone's deadlines. Mornings start with coffee on the deck and the herons working the shallows; afternoons are for the boat or a long lunch downtown; evenings are for the screened porch, slow conversations, and the quiet that comes off the river after dark. We've watched first dates become engagements here. We've watched our friends' kids grow into people we now host on their own.

This isn't a rental. It isn't a B&B with strangers down the hall. It's our home — and when we're not in it, we'd rather it be filled with the people we'd most want to share it with. Send us your dates, tell us why you're coming through, and we'll do the rest. There will be coffee in the kitchen and clean towels by the dock when you arrive. The rest is yours.

The House

Built to host.

Three floors of light, river views from every room, and a long list of places to land. Make yourself at home — every door here is open to you.

i.Outside

Pool & hot tub

Heated pool steps from the dock. Hot tub for the after-dinner soak. Towels stacked at the gate.

The dock at golden hour

Sunset cocktails on the boards. Refreshments stocked dockside. Watch the herons work the shallows while the light goes pink.

The tree swing

Strung from the live oak in the side yard. Kid-tested, parent-approved. A surprising amount of adult-time on it too.

ii.Main floor

The always-open kitchen

The heart of the house. Expansive butler's pantry behind it stocked with everything you'd reach for. No "pls ask before opening" rules — make breakfast at 11 or eggs at midnight.

The sunrise front porch

The first room of the day. East-facing, big rocking chairs, the morning light coming through the live oaks. Bring a coffee and watch the neighborhood wake up.

The screened porch

Outdoor kitchen, ceiling fans, deep chairs, a TV for the games. Where the long Lowcountry evenings live. Refreshments within reach.

iii.Second floor — yours

Billiards & the relaxation deck

Pool table for after-dinner games. Open-air deck off the back for the morning coffee or the evening nightcap. River views the whole way.

The puzzle & game room

For the rainy afternoon, the slow Sunday, the kids who want a project. Always a puzzle going.

Your private kitchen

A second kitchen on the guest level. Light refreshments, snacks, coffee. Use it on your own clock — no need to come downstairs before you're ready.

Around Charleston

A few of our favorites.

A few of our favorite places. The list grows every visit.

i.Beaches
·

Sullivan's Island

25 min east

Quieter than Folly. Park on the side streets, walk the wide flat sand, end at Poe's Tavern for a burger.

·

Isle of Palms

30 min east

The classic family beach. Wide, flat, family-friendly. Coconut Joe's for an oceanfront lunch with the kids.

·

Folly Beach

25 min south

The surf town. More personality, more crowd. Walk to the pier, lunch at Lost Dog Café.

ii.Places to eat
·

Halls Chophouse

Downtown · Dinner

The big-night-out steakhouse. Live music in the bar, the porterhouse for two, ask for Tommy.

·

Slightly North of Broad (SNOB)

Downtown · Dinner

The local-favorite Lowcountry classic. Sit at the chef's bar if you can, get the maverick grits.

·

Betty Lou's Bistro

Mt. Pleasant · Lunch or dinner

The one we send everyone to. Off-the-tourist-path, generous portions, the kind of place you'll want to come back to.

iii.Activities & recreation
·

Magnolia Plantation

15 min north on the Ashley

The oldest landscaped garden in America. Romantic in spring, ghostly in winter, always worth a morning.

·

The Battery & Rainbow Row

Downtown · Walk

The classic. Walk it at golden hour. Bring a cocktail in a to-go cup.

·

Boat the Ashley

Off our dock

The boat is yours during your stay. Sunset loop, lazy afternoon to a sandbar, or just drift.
